Wartime Garden

Plants like papayas were common in wartime gardens

Behind the main building at Memories at Old Ford Factory compound is a garden plot which has been dedicated to wartime crops. Sugarcane, tapioca, oil palm, vegetables and rice padi are some of the crops which visitors can find on site. These are all crops that were grown by the people to overcome the food shortages and provide their own supply of food during the Occupation years. These crops are watered by a new rain water harvesting system, to replicate what the residents of the settlements of Endau and Bahau might have used to water their crops back during the Occupation years.

At the Wartime Garden, visitors can see how the people adapted to solve their problems and get a feel of how the garden plots that people had to grow their crops in during the Occupation were like. It is a memorable experience seeing the plants and picturing in your mind the time when these plants were common and were planted in people's garden plots to provide a source of food. Visitors can also understand the suffering of the people who had to rely on their own grown plants for food during the Occupation through the Wartime Garden.
